Be Earth Smart
United Specialty Products’ search for safer cleaning products began through our work as a mechanical contractor in the early 1990s. We were assessing failed/failing wastewater treatment systems at remote BC sport fishing lodges.
We discovered the problem wasn’t in the WWTs (thankfully); it was in the housekeeping closets. The science, as it turned out, is simple: Stop dumping poisons down the drain, and the natural processes will thrive.
The clear winner to replace the toxins was EarthSmart® from United Laboratories. Using EarthSmart® facility-maintenance products, the wastewater problems went away, cleaning jobs became easier, staff worked safer and healthier, the environment benefited, the employers gained credibility and worry-free compliance…AND saved a lot of money.
Our research also revealed that many so-called ‘green’ chemicals simply “weren’t”. We collected and charted comprehensive material safety data sheet comparisons, and none of United’s competitors would want you to see them.
By the start of the new millennium, we had helped many, many more remote establishments convert to safe, environmentally responsible chemistry, from Vancouver Island, through the Central Coast, to the northern tip of Haida Gwaii.
Today, we bring the same common sense, non-hazardous technologies to schools, hotels, health care, meat plants, and animal shelters.
Wherever we go, we find opportunities to realize results like the ones achieved in those first lodges. And it always feels great telling this green story, being a trusted chemical adviser, and helping customers assess their facility maintenance needs.
We are proud to be based in Delta, BC…Western Canada’s birthplace of the “blue box”, and home to Burns Bog, the largest undeveloped, environmentally protected urban landmass in North America.
We welcome your calls on anything to do with non-hazardous facility maintenance, or creating safe and environmentally responsible workplaces.
Get to Know the EarthSmart® Story
SETTING THE GREEN STANDARD SINCE 1992
Since being founded in 1964, United Laboratories has always sought better, safer chemical technologies.
In 1992, when supposed “environmentally friendly” chemical products were starting to be marketed under a shroud of green, United called the industry out by defining its products according to measurable, unwavering EarthSmart® standards. And, we’ve been doing it since before it was the trendy thing to do.
When it comes to defining a United product’s “greenness,” there is nothing better than our set of EarthSmart® standards. There’s no grey area here and there’s certainly no greenwashing. A product either meets the standards—and thus is classified as EarthSmart®—or it doesn’t. It’s been that way since 1992.
Today, for a United product to be classified as EarthSmart® it must meet at least 10 of the 12 EarthSmart® standards:
- Must Have Only Zeros or Ones on HMIS® III Numbers
- Must Contain No Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
- Must Contain No Hazardous Components
- Must Contain No Nonylphenol Ethoxylates (NPEs)
- Must Contain No Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS)
- Must Contain No SARA Section 313 Reportable Ingredients
- Must Contain No Phosphates
- Must Contain No Heavy Metals
- Must Contain No Chlorine
- Must Contain No Phthalates (PVC)
- Must Be Packaged in Environmentally Responsible Packaging
- Must Be Certified as “Green” by a Recognized Third-Party Agency According to the Standards of That Agency
Our EarthSmart® standards are as stringent as they come. No doubt about it, creating EarthSmart® products that meet these standards—and still do the job—is a challenge. But we’re up to the task. Because, after all, Responsible Innovation™ is in our Nature.
